The design and development of the East London Mosque, a complex and challenging architectural project, required a flexible and sensitive approach to interpret and comply with the requirements of Muslim religious worship. The building has to fulfil the functions of school, community centre, offices, mortuary, home and shops, as well as a place of worship and the planning had to take account of male and female segregation. The design incorporated the traditional features of minarets, arches and a dome using modern techniques. Although our brief included some interior decor, the aim was to provide a neutral backdrop against which decoration could be added in years to come.
